My passion for photography began at an early age and I have been taking photos ever since.  My artistic journey has taken many turns and my careers have spanned many fields.  I trained as a nurse at St Thomas’ Hospital and specialised in paediatrics at Guys Hospital and continue to work in the NHS.  I also worked with Alastair Hull, veteran traveller to Afghanistan and author of The Complete Guide to Kilims and Living with Kilims, both by Thames and Hudson, for 15 years organising and running his kilim and ethnic art exhibitions around the country.  Working with and observing people from all walks of life, and also working with the beauty of rugs and textiles has always inspired me to capture as much of it all on film.

My recent commission for P&O Cruises gave me the chance to travel the world taking photographs and then creating them into 42 photo mosaics containing just under 90,000 photographs.  The huge number of photos required to create these mosaics enabled me to fully explore the intricacies and subtle nuances that make up the true fabric of a place, person or culture and capture it all on one canvas.  Some of the photo mosaics and many of my photos are displayed on the following pages.

The overall concept of my project on Ventura was to create a journey in pictures, extending into the world around us and focusing upon the destinations and also the aspirations of the cruise ship traveller.

My images aim initially to entrance, and then to stimulate the spectators’ minds by encouraging them to want to look further into the pictures themselves. This switch from purely visual stimulus to intellectual stimulus leads the viewer into their own personal dreams of travel. The spectator will be drawn from the larger image into the multifarious worlds of the smaller images – like looking through a kaleidoscope and seeing a thousand fractured visions that together make up the image of what they have already seen.

The pictures aim to excite, so the passengers are riveted by the potential adventures that lie ahead of them - inducing an enthusiasm for further travel.

The images themselves are strong, simple, colourful and recognisable and aim to create an immediate impact. The aim, however, is that the experience does not end there..... but that one moves closer into the image and looks at the many mosaic pictures. The idea behind each one of those smaller images then becomes apparent - a visual puzzle.

Enclosed within the 42 images, will be about 90,000 complete photographs, each one being a visual description of or reference to something outside the principal image, and yet also being a part of the much bigger story.

The paradox of complexity and simplicity all rolled into one.

I am available to undertake other photo mosaic commissions, involving the taking of all the photos and the creation of the photo mosaic from an image of the clients choice.
